Welcome to Gina's Farmhouse

"Even the Government knows you can't farm at 6,000 feet."

Remember the movie McClintock?  That's what John Wayne told the farmers who came to New Mexico to claim their 160-acre homesteads.  Well, he wasn't too far off, Giovanni and Gina have found.  Giovanni, an Electronics Engineer, and Gina, a retired Casino Executive, decided to abandon the fast track and seek the simple life a few years back.  They found a great little 5-acre spread at the base of the Ruby Mountains just outside Elko, Nevada and decided to live their dream.

It hasn't gone quite according to the master plan, but it's fairly close.  And, as Gina will tell you, "At the end of the day when we sit in our rockers and look at those gorgeous mountains changing colors with the sunset, we count our blessings."

We realized after the first summer that Mr. McClintock was pretty right on.  After all the stuff we put into the ground, the garden grew pretty well considering Nevada only has an average annual rainfall of nine inches.  Of course, the last spring snow which came in June along with the first fall snow following during the first week of September sort of put a damper on things.  And the deer, rabbits and ground squirrels usually got their dinner out of the garden before we could.  It took some getting use to traveling 20 miles to the nearest major supermarket.  But we persevered.  We've learned a lot along the way and look forward to sharing our adventures and misadventures with you.
